I went to Gloss House to visit for a few days. I'm still here, I'll be back in London on Tuesday.
I haven’t been over there as much since I gained possession of the London house, but I wanted to see Ewan, and I also wanted to warn Fowles and Mina about their bracelets, because they might start checking muggleborns for them now. I gave them their bracelets over a year ago, and whenever I’ve been back to visit since then, they didn’t really treat me any differently, or say anything about them, but I didn't really expect them to.
Anyways. I told Mina we needed to talk and sort of pointed at my wrist, and she picked up on it right away and we went to the stables to talk to Fowles because it’d be more private there, and I told them that people might start checking for bracelets because a muggleborn got caught who was wearing one. And I also brought a radio with me that I’d bought from a second-hand store and was planning to give to them in secret, and when they saw the radio, they got very quiet and sort of looked over at each other. And then they started talking. More than they ever have before.
First off, they already have a radio, and they know about the free hour. All the field hands and gardeners and house servants get together and listen to it in secret every night in one of the dormitories, and the people who have to be on duty get told about it second-hand. And they’ve been doing it for months and months. And that’s not all. Sally-Anne, do you remember Ms Macalister? The woman who always looks so bitter and who shouted at you for taking extra gifts for Gemma and Phillip at that awful Easter party? She’s the manager of the estate, she runs all the servants and oversees everything, I think she’s a half-blooded, but I’m not sure. But. Get this. She’s the one who got them the radio.
Fowles said that Macalister was from this really small village in Scotland, and that as soon as she got the job at Gloss, she went to the camps and tried to get everyone she could find from the village to bring them to the estate so they could all be together. And she went to Hogwarts with Fowles, they were in the same year or something, and she tracked him down and pulled him out of the camps too, and when she found out that Mina was his only living relative, she insisted on bringing her with as well. And this entire time I thought Macalister was this mean and nasty bint, but the way Fowles talked about her, it's like she wants people to think she’s really cruel and working everyone hard. But that they were all in on it together. Macalister and the workers.
Anyways. I thought it was worth sharing.

Date: 2014-06-24 02:47 am (UTC)I think it was Macalister who found it. She seems sharp enough.
I suppose I ought to speak to her, but it'll take some care. Maybe Fowles and Mina can help.
I'll be back soon. Come over for dinner tomorrow, yeah? Justin, you can come too if you've no other plans.
